ABSTRACT

Cannabin stands fora biologically active resin extracted from Indian hemp. Smith reported about presence of cannabin in Cannabis indica. Resin is composed of cannabinol, pseudo-cannabinol, cannabinin. Now-a-days, resin is considered to be residual THC and plant matter. The cannabin is the alcoholic or resinous extract employed in medicine. Personne (1857) separated the volatile oil in cannabene and cannabene hydride. Cannabene is a colourless fluid having intoxicating properties similar to Cannabis. Cannabinine was isolated by Siebold and Bradbury (1881), in a very small quantity. The extraction methodology was similar to that of nicotine. Matthew Hay (1883) isolated tatano-cannabinine in crystalline form having tetanic property. Jahns in 1889 proposed tatano-cannabinine identical with choline. Choline, trigonelline, muscarine, and an unidentified betain have been reported alongwith cannabamines. An ethanol extract of the root of a Mexican variant of C. sativa after fractionation and chromatography, afforded the new spermidine alkaloid, cannabisativine. Tetrahydrocannabinol is more precisely known as (−)-trans-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol. It is the chief psychoactive constituent of cannabis and hasish. Tetrahydrocannabinol is found in the resin secreted by glands of the cannabis plant.
