ABSTRACT

This chapter examines trends for information and communication technology (ICT) device development and trends in the older population’s characteristics. ICT advances have allowed for the development of what has been termed the Internet of Things (IoT). Many IoT devices such as smartwatches depend on mobile phone applications to control and link them to home networks. The chapter reviews some trends in the types of environments older adults will frequent, concentrating on dwellings, and some of the motives and goals that older adults are attempting to achieve. Non-traditional work arrangements such as telework may increase in coming decades, so attention is needed to ensure better ergonomics for home environments. Older adults spend most of their time in their homes, and watching television. The chapter suggests some constant features of good design: principles likely to stand the test of time and change.
