ABSTRACT

After reviewing the differentiation of neurons and sensory cells from neurogenic placodes in Chapter 6 and of photoreceptors in the last chapter, I will turn in this chapter to the cell types derived from the lens and adenohypophyseal placodes. These two placodes are the only placodes in vertebrates that do not give rise to any neurons or sensory cells and are, thus, known as non-neurogenic placodes. Like in the last two chapters, I will first briefly introduce the cell types originating from these two placodes and will then review how their specification and differentiation is transcriptionally regulated.
