ABSTRACT

The torsions of structural members with non – circular cross sections are discussed in this chapter. Elastic solutions based on Poisson's differential equation and applicable boundary conditions are obtained for members with elliptical, triangular, rectangular and sectors of a circle cross sections. Plastic solutions for members with oval cross section and formulas for fully plastic torques are obtained using membrane and sand – hill analogies. Torsion of thin – walled members including thin – walled tubes and members with restrained structural sections (angles, I – sections, etc.) are also covered.
