ABSTRACT

This chapter presents information on the medical importance, geographic distribution, and biological aspects of flies such as human bot flies, screwworm flies, Congo floor maggot, Tumbu flies, and sarcophagid flies. It provides recommended procedures for treatment of these flies bite. The condition of fly larvae occurring in human tissues is called myiasis. The recommended therapeutic procedure for all forms of myiasis is the direct removal of the maggots and treatment to prevent or control secondary infection. Treatment of screwworm fly myiasis usually involves removal of the larvae. The Tumbu fly is a blow fly whose larvae can burrow into human subcutaneous tissues, producing a furuncular type of myiasis. Tumbu flies cause cutaneous myiasis in several mammalian hosts, including humans. Therapeutic measures for blow fly myiasis include removal of the maggots (surgically, if necessary) and treatment for secondary bacterial and fungal infections should they occur.
