ABSTRACT

This chapter presents modeling and simulation of typical mass transfer operations including gas adsorption or stripping, distillation, liquid extraction, absorption, drying, and evaporation. The discussion on calculations of mass transfer operations using MATLAB® is confined to diffusion, evaporation, absorption, distillation, and membrane separation. The MATLAB programs provided in this chapter can be used to compute mass transfer by diffusion, unsteady-state mass transfer, evaporation, absorption, binary distillation, shortcut calculation for multicomponent distillation, steady-state rigorous distillation calculations, differential distillation, and membrane separation. Multicomponent distillation computations by MATLAB are described in detail because mass transfer by distillation is one of the most important operations in chemical engineering.
