ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various important aspects concerning reliability and maintenance programs for nuclear power plants. It covers reliability programs’ objective and requirements; guidance for developing reliability programs; maintenance programs’ objective, scope, and background; guidance for developing maintenance programs; reliability and maintenance programs-related standards; and problems.

The guidance for developing reliability programs in general as well as nine items concerning it are discussed separately. These items are using systematic approaches for identifying and ranking systems important to safety (SIS); specifying reliability-related targets; highlighting and describing potential failure modes; stating minimum capabilities and levels of performance; maintenance programs; inspections, tests, modeling, and monitoring; implementing a reliability program; recording and reporting results of reliability program–related activities; and documenting a reliability program.

Similarly, the guidance for developing maintenance programs in general as well as eight items concerning it are discussed separately. These items are program basis, maintenance organization, maintenance activities, structure, system or component monitoring, maintenance work, spare parts and procurement, management assessment and program review, and recording.

There are 10 problems at the end of the chapter to test the reader's comprehension in the area.
