ABSTRACT

Since the load testing of piles is expensive, the cost clearly needs to be carefully weighed against the reduction in risk and assurance of satisfactory behaviour that the pile test provides. Piles cannot be readily inspected once they have been constructed, and variations in the bearing stratum are difficult to detect. Hence it is not easy for the engineer to be assured that the piled foundations comply with the specifications and drawings. It goes without saying that a comprehensive site investigation is essential.
