ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter provides the scope, aim, objectives and motivations as well as the structure of the book and its contents. It presents an overview of sustainable energy planning of transport and energy systems within the concept of smart cities. The questions as well as the knowledge gaps pointing to a need for an assessment of the modern energy system under the smart cities perspective from an exergetic point of view are highlighted in this chapter and will be further analyzed, evaluated and discussed in the following chapters as part of an integrated approach to the interactions of energy and transportation in urban environments with intelligent energy systems.
