ABSTRACT

With the liberation of the electricity and power markets worldwide, operations for aggregation and control got a different meaning. The Transmission System Operators (TSOs) – which only few decades ago were considered the same with the state power company – only serve as a centralized grid operator with the overall grid management and with the responsibility of keeping the market in balance. This resulted in new ways for companies to jump in and that developed gap and created Business Models (BMs) where Information Technology Platforms (IT-platforms), forecasting models and new customer engagements originated resulting in new technological setups between all the involved parties, with compliance of operation standards defined by the TSO. This way a competitive environment has been developed and created space for more Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), more electricity and power markets, and the potential, ultimately, for a well-developed and synchronous smart city environment.
