ABSTRACT

A good video reference can bring in subtleties and detail that may be missed when creating purely from imagination and can make the difference between a good animation and a great one. The idea can be better sold by combining animation, audio, and other disciplinary trips so as to maximize their value to the team, with a smaller group recording the material to be shared among the whole team on their return. A key traditional principle—there are generally two main approaches to animation creation. Straight-ahead animation is done in a linear manner, with the animator progressing chronologically over the animation from start to finish, whereas pose to pose takes the approach of initially “blocking in” a rough version of the entire animation, then modifying and working from there. Using a pose-to-pose approach allows rough “proxy” versions of any required animation to be created very quickly, with minimal commitment from the animator.
