ABSTRACT

Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) is one of the oldest and world most important spices and is called’ ‘King of Spices.’ The word “Peperi” in Greek, Pepper in English and Greek, and Piper in Latin were derived from the Sanskrit word “Pippali,” which was the name of Long Pepper. In pepper cultivation, vines are trailed over living trees or on columns of 5-6 m tall for support. The climbing woody stems have swollen nodes with clinging roots, which helps in anchoring the vine to the support trees.
