ABSTRACT

Diabetes has been known of for approximately 3,000 years and insulin, discovered by Banting and Best in 1921, represented a bright hope for its treatment. Diabetes will never amount to a dreadful condition if diagnosed earlier and appropriately managed, and patients who are affected can live out their allotted spans of life. No other disease like diabetes brings about so much happiness or misfortune, depending on whether patients have an accurate knowledge of the disease. Diabetes is an abnormal metabolic state caused by the insufficient functioning of blood insulin. The most significant cause is heredity, followed by excessive intake of food, lack of exercise, and stress. However, diabetes can be prevented in a person who has a gene for diabetes through maintenance of a regular daily life. The onset of complications can be suppressed and a natural life span can be ensured by the introduction of an early treatment and care regimen, even when diabetes has occurred. However, a deep understanding and cooperation with the patient and his/her family are necessary in order to cure the disease completely. Although diabetes is certainly a disease that cannot be easily cured, the situation is not completely hopeless.
