ABSTRACT

R/C walls together with frames and diaphragms constitute the main structural members in the planning and designing of the structural system of a seismic-resistant R/C building.

Thus far, many detailed references have been made to the structural behaviour of walls as wall structural systems (Chapter 4, Sections 4.5.3.3 and 4.5.3.4), to their behaviour factor q (Chapter 5.4), to their modelling for structural analysis (Chapter 5.6.3.1) and to their capacity design action effects (Chapter 6, Sections 6.1.5 to 6.1.7). All of the above refer to demand. In the following sections, detailed reference will be made to the capacity of R/C walls in terms of strength, ductility and energy dissipation under cyclic loading.
