ABSTRACT

The methodology presented in this chapter is based mostly on An Introduction to Error Analysis, The Study of Uncertainties in Physical Measurements (Taylor, 1997), Evaluation of Measurement Data – Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (JCGM, 2008) as well as The Expression of Uncertainty and Confidence in Measurement (UKAS, 2012). Other publications can also be very helpful in explaining the difficult concepts (Cook, 2002). The author strongly recommends reading at least these fundamental works, which define in much greater detail the whole topic of measurement uncertainty. This chapter cannot reproduce the breadth of the information provided in these detailed publications. Instead, the focus is made on a clear and practical description of the most important concepts and their implementation in practical uncertainty calculations. It should also be noted that there is a continuing progress in the field of methodology of uncertainty estimation and therefore the latest publications on the matter should be studied accordingly.
