ABSTRACT

Human Factors is the mental or cognitive aspect of a system design while ergonomics is the physical aspect. Design is the process of converting the voice of the customer into some product or process. The effectiveness of a transportation system is a measure of whether or not the chosen product or service achieves the objectives of a particular “transaction” or journey. The “cradle to grave” description of a product or service encompasses design, production, use, and eventual disposal. In a large organization, the marketing group will interpret the requirements articulated by the end user, sometimes with the help of an ergonomist. The customer requirements for getting money out of the bank include ease of use of the teller machine and security of the process. Product design specifications are driven by process requirements, which in turn depend on intended outcomes. The transportation example will be used to illustrate these challenges of prediction in design.
