ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the determination of the critical flow velocity of peat. It shows strong effect of the relative turbulence intensity and cohesion and addresses initiation of motion of clay. It also address the critical shear stress and the critical flow velocity, presents empirical shear stress formulas and also presents the erosion rate can be estimated with a formula. The grain becomes unstable if the instantaneous bed shear stress exceeds the critical shear stress. The probability that the instantaneous bed shear stress is greater than a characteristic critical shear stress is a measure of the transport of sediments. The physio-chemical properties of cohesive sediments play a significant role in the resistance of cohesive sediments to currents. The relation between instantaneous products of velocity components and the instantaneous force on a sediment particle is not fully understood.
