ABSTRACT

This chapter presents several case studies of prototype projects to show the application of the design formulas presented in the manual. In some case studies, scour results of numerical models are compared with predicted values with the design formulas, while in other case studies computations with analytical formulas are compared with observed scour. The case studies address different hydraulic structures, viz. bridge piers, culverts, sills and ship propellers. The case studies have been provided by consultants, contractors, research institutes and Rijkswaterstaat, who are responsible for the content. A scour analysis was undertaken for both the existing situation and a scenario following the proposed excavation. Both constriction scour and local pier scour were considered. The proposed works comprised excavation of the area around the piers, placement of geotextile over the excavated batter, placement of filter rock and rip-rap, and placement of excavated material to reinstate to natural ground level.
