ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the social and economic indicators of rangeland sustainability identified by the Roundtable process. Initially, the general challenge of the associations between social and economic sustainability and ecological sustainability is discussed briefly. Then the role played by large social and economic forces in the application of indicators at local levels is presented. These forces apply to many areas dominated by rangeland and need to be used for context in any discussion of indicators. The process used by the Roundtable to choose indicators is presented and the final social and economic indicators are presented, along with their respective data sources, and the spatial levels at which they will be analyzed in later chapters. Each indicator is then presented in detail, followed by a discussion of what, in general, these indicators mean at various spatial levels.
