ABSTRACT

Periungual and subungual warts are caused by the human papillomavirus and are more common in the fingernails than in toenails. They are the most frequent benign tumor of the nail apparatus. Injured or macerated skin is a predisposing condition for their development. Usually, they are cosmetic disturbing but otherwise asymptomatic, though fissuring or subungual localization may cause pain. Consider Bowen disease or squamous cell carcinoma in assumed solitary subungual warts above the age of 40 ( Figures 15.1 – 15.3 ).
