ABSTRACT

Crops are not only a key source of food for humans and other animals but also a major source of medicine and fuel. It is, therefore, necessary to enhance the qualitative and quantitative features of crops through effective scientific mechanisms. CRISPR-Cas is one such mechanism that provides speedy, reliable and precise crop genetic improvement. CRISPR-mediated genetic modifications are undoubtedly useful, but it has given rise to various bioethical and biosafety concerns. These concerns have resulted in the formation of various policies around the world for the regulation of CRISPR-modified crops. Regulatory policies and authorities related to CRISPR-modified crops along with a process for GMO crop approval will be discussed in this chapter.
