ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the topic of general Artificial Intelligence (AI) from various angles. It discusses how machines think differently from us. AI is a general term for describing the ability of a machine to think and behave like humans. DeepMind's greatest breakthrough to date is the cracking of the protein-folding problem in 2019. Watson's ‘Toronto’ answer is just an example of how AI systems process data and solve problems in ways that are so very different from the way that human intelligence works. The goal of learning models is to optimise a given function, thus focusing on the end result. Halting the learning process once the end result is achieved contradicts a fundamentally human characteristic, which is that human intelligence is adaptable and can keep learning in changing environments. The American Cold War era science-fiction movie War Games perfectly illustrates the aspirational goal of general AI.
