ABSTRACT

In the 1980s medical science discovered that blood circulation is largely under the control of a gas, nitric oxide (NO), made on demand by the inner lining of arterial blood vessels, the endothelium. It was soon discovered that the endothelium can be damaged by Reactive Oxygen Species impairing NO formation. This impairment leads to hypertension, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease and many more threats to health and to life. Damaged endothelium leads to blood vessel rigidity which impairs blood circulation. However, omega-3 fatty acids restore the blood vessel compliance (i.e., flexibility) needed for healthy blood circulation.
