ABSTRACT

Therapeutic mammaplasty (TM) describes the excision of breast cancer in combination with plastic surgical techniques to lift and reduce the breast. This technique may extend the boundaries of standard breast-conserving surgery (BCS) by reducing the risk of poor cosmetic outcomes or allowing some women to avoid mastectomy. This paper is one of the first to systematically describe methods for planning and performing TM procedures based on tumour location. Specifically, the authors describe type A and type B scenarios based on whether the tumour lies within the standard excision pattern of each technique, and they outline appropriate skin pattern and nipple pedicle selection based on tumour location.
