ABSTRACT

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is often detected during routine mammography and represents 20% of all screen-detected breast cancers. Despite treatment, approximately 5% develop an invasive recurrence and 4% develop a DCIS recurrence over a period of 10 years. Since most DCIS lesions will never progress to invasive disease, there is a need to develop management strategies that avoid overtreatment.
