ABSTRACT

Although today very few conditions represent absolute contraindications to renal transplantation (Table 2.1), the potential risks associated with immunosuppressive therapy necessitate careful selection and preparation of the recipient. The screening of candidates for renal transplantation should include a thorough medical history, physical and psychiatric examination, and immunological evaluation. Attention should also be paid to the age of the patient and to the type of disease responsible for end-stage renal failure. Particularly intensive should be the work-up for cardiovascular disease, infection, and malignancy, which represent the most frequent causes of death after transplantation.
