ABSTRACT

In the early 19th century, experiments began with a variety

of cervical and vaginal barriers, several of which are in cur-

rent use. The first-ever written prescription for a contracep-

tive (barrier method) tampon can be found in the Ebers

Papyrus, a compendium of medical practices written in

1550 BC. The greatest appeal of barrier methods is also their

greatest drawback: they have no apparent effects on the

human system and need to be used only at the time of

intercourse. However, they are less effective than other

methods. They should be used with a spermicide, as this

improves effectiveness.
