ABSTRACT

BCR, ABL, AND THE PH CHROMOSOME ON A GENOMIC LEVEL

Genomic history of the Ph chromosome

Nowell and Hungerford1 discovered the first consistent chromosome abnormality in human cancer in 1960. They identified a small abnormal chromosome in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), and named it the Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome after the city in which it was discovered. The exact origin of this minute chromosome was unclear at that point in time.
