ABSTRACT

The starting dose is chosen so as to be well tolerated by even the most sensitive patient and the dose adjusted on the basis of patient history and skin testing results. Perennial immunotherapy begins with small incremental doses of allergens given once or twice a week. Allergy injections are given subcutaneously. The number of injections administered should be determined by the physician and should be based on the number of sensitivities. Increasing the number of allergens in a given vial of extract dilutes the amount of any single allergen delivered with each injection. This could jeopardize a beneficial response to treatment, as improvement is associated with larger

amounts of each selected allergen administered. Allergen extracts are generally mixed in variable combinations as dictated by the pattern of patient sensitivity.
