ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the reader to the concept of gender identity disorder (GID), to give a broad overview of current thoughts on mechanism, to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of the international standard of care (called Harry Benjamin Standards of Care, version 6) and to discuss in broad terms the management of the client group.
