ABSTRACT

The classic lesion is a denuded area of skin with a clean, friable, dark-red surface. Although initially covering only a small area, the lesions can progressively enlarge to be well over 10 cm in diameter. Although classed as an ulcerating disease, the granulating lesions of Donovanosis can initially be papular. Larger ulcers can be very smelly. Genital skin is the most likely area to be affected, but other sites can be involved, including subcutaneous tissues as well as deeper structures such as pelvic organs and bone.
