ABSTRACT
The difficulties of estimating the risk of failure before a bridge is started and dangers of misinterpreting failure statistics were discussed in Chapter 7. A reasonable method of recording failures is as a percentage per year. Recent large surveys of bridges made in practice and elsewhere in different countries show that about 90% of bridges last at least 10 years.
