ABSTRACT

Although disabled people may have received excellent training in a hospital or special center, they are still likely to have significant limitations and may lose some of their acquired skills when they return to the community. Sporting activities, graded according to level of skill and type of disability, offer a chance to continue training and acquire new skills outside the hospital. Sport also offers enormous benefits in social and psychological terms (Figure 18.1). Sports activities for disabled people are arranged in most countries, and participation is generally free of charge. Most of the sports involved have been adapted to suit disabled athletes and competition takes place up to international level.
