ABSTRACT

Now that we have reviewed the proper measurement of blood pressure in the elderly, which must obviously include supine and standing readings, attention will be directed to the remainder of the evaluation in those found to be hypertensive, defined as a usual blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg (Table 5). Those with systolic pressure above 140 and diastolic pressure below 90 mmHg are defined as having isolated systolic hypertension (ISH), although in many series ISH is inappropriately reserved only for those with systolic pressure above 160 mmHg.
