ABSTRACT

Diathermy is integral to the practice of urology. It relies on the safe and effective conversion of mains alternating current (50Hz) to the radiofrequency range (3003000Hz) and application of this energy to tissues. The high frequency energy heats tissues and, dependent on its waveform, it will either cut or coagulate tissue. The energy can be applied to the tissues in two forms: monopolar and bipolar. Generators are of two types, isolated and earthed, though the former is safest and most frequently used.
