ABSTRACT

Priapism is a prolonged erection, occurring in the absence of sexual stimulation and is not relieved by orgasm. It is uncommon, but seen more frequently following the introduction of treatment for erectile dysfunction. There is no identifiable cause in 60% of patients while the remaining 40% are associated with a secondary cause. These include leukaemia, pelvic malignancy, pelvic infections, penile trauma, spinal cord injury or the use of medications.
