ABSTRACT

Transplantation of tissues and whole organs has become commonplace. Transplantation is useful for treating a variety of disease conditions not amenable to other therapies. The technical aspects of tissue and organ harvesting are well understood, and the surgical procedures for grafting tissues and organs into the body are also well-documented and reliable. The major problems that limit the usefulness of transplantation include the shortages of available tissues, immunologic rejection phenomena and long-term complications.
