ABSTRACT

Both techniques use simple methods for calculating the survival probabilities that are easily implemented through statistics packages. The techniques will be illustrated using the following example.

Worked example 1

Data on 50 patients undergoing renal replacement therapy over 78 months were collected. Each patient was categorized as low (n=24) or high risk (n=26). The primary outcome was the survival time after commencing renal replacement therapy until death. In addition to the survival time in days, data were collected on the sex of the patient and on whether the patient had a transplant during the study period.
