ABSTRACT
Audit is a process by which health professionals assess, evaluate and improve health care. Audit is not a new concept and extends as far back as Hippocrates who reported on the outcome of the patients he treated. Healthcare professionals have been undertaking audit for many years, although more recently this process has been formalized. Audit is frequently undertaken as part of quality assessment and quality assurance programmes.
