ABSTRACT
This is the process by which outcomes (usually mortality) in health care are evaluated against the severity of illness in the patient population being studied. In the United Kingdom, risk adjustment is most developed in Intensive Care and Accident & Emergency medicine. Worldwide, risk adjustment has also been used in containing healthcare costs, in evaluating coronary artery surgery and for improving quality in healthcare systems.
