ABSTRACT
This is a complication of diabetes mellitus that may result from failure to take adequate doses of insulin or as the first manifestation of diabetes. The patients are typically hyperglycaemic but not always. The mortality in specialist units is <5% and causes of death include hypokalaemia, cerebral oedema and the precipitating illness (such as an infection, aspiration or myocardial infarct).
