ABSTRACT
The great majority of urgent eye problems can be diagnosed with careful history-taking and with basic examination techniques. A slit-lamp microscope is invaluable, providing illumination and magnification especially for small superficial foreign bodies, penetrating wounds, the track of intraocular foreign bodies, flare in the anterior chamber and small abnormalities of the iris. Use of local anaesthetic drops, and mydriatric drops aid complete examination.
