ABSTRACT
The main priority initially is to obtain cultures of both blood and synovial fluid to confirm the diagnosis and guide antibiotic selection. The joint should be surgically drained both to remove infected synovial fluid and to decompress the joint. Antibiotics should be given intravenously. The initial selection will be based upon a knowledge of the likely organisms while awaiting the results of cultures.
