ABSTRACT
Tetanus is characterized by muscular rigidity and spasms and is induced by the exotoxin, tetanosplasmin, released by the bacterium that grows anaerobically at the site of injury. Between 1984 and 1995 there were 145 cases of tetanus in England and Wales. The highest risk groups are the elderly (53% aged over 65 years) and women.
