ABSTRACT

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), previously called pseudotumour cerebri or benign intracranial hypertension, is the diagnostic term used in an awake and alert patient who has signs and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, the absence of localizing findings on neurologic examination (except abducens palsy) and normal neurodiagnostic studies, except for increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure (>20 cmH2O in the non-obese and >25cmH2O in the obese patient), with no other cause of increased intracranial pressure present. These are known as the modified Dandy criteria which must be met to make the diagnosis of IIH. In children the CSF pressure is lower (<7.5 cmH2O aged <2 years and <3.5cmH2O aged <5 years).
