ABSTRACT
Although it is often forgotten, in fact the physical barrier plays a critical role in the defense against infection, and indeed without its contribution it is highly unlikely that the innate and adaptive immune systems could cope. The physical barrier comprises an extensive surface area that includes the skin, covering approximately 2 m2 in the adult, and mucous membranes that line the digestive, reproductive and respiratory systems, measuring approximately 400 m2.
