ABSTRACT
One of the features of atopic eczema is dry skin associated with an abnormality of the skin barrier or stratum corneum. This dry and abnormal stratum corneum has impaired barrier function and may play a role in the etiology of the eczema by allowing penetration of irritants and microorganisms. Emollients are used to try to create an artificial skin barrier. Essentially, they contain greasy/fatty substances, which form a barrier against penetration of possible irritants and microorganisms. They will also decrease transepidermal water loss and therefore increase hydration of the epidermis.
