ABSTRACT

Regression of atherosclerosis refers to any change in an established lesion that is favorable because it improves the course of the disease. The ideal change would be the complete disappearance of the lesion. This may indeed occur with type I and II lesions, and probably type III as well. Such lesions can vanish in animal experiments but, as these lesion types do not obstruct the flow of blood, their disappearance would not benefit the symptomatic patient.
