ABSTRACT

SUMMARY There is a major need to develop new drugs for patients with COPD, and a large number of targets have been defined for therapy1-3 (Figure 8.1). It is fundamental to stop patients smoking and to provide safer cigarettes, and new aids to smoking cessation are being developed. Bronchodilators are the basis of current drug therapy for COPD, although there is only minor reversibility of FEV1 in COPD, and tiotropium and long-acting β2-agonists have been considerable therapeutic advances.
