Anatomy of the breast

The breasts are modified sebaceous glands within the superficial fascia of the anterior chest wall. The average adult breast weighs 200-300 grams and is composed of 80% fat and connective tissue and 20% glandular tissue. Figure 2.1 illustrates the cross-sectional anatomy of the breast and Figure 2.2 shows the terms used to describe the anatomic divisions of the breast.
